The Maps
The Maps in Dead By Daylight have had a lot of hard work and detail put into them; you can tell the developers really wanted to capture the right tone of terror in each particular map. Semi-procedural in nature, there are 16 total realms, with 36 maps within those. Each one has its own unique approach in terms of places to hide, ambush spots for Killers, and general item, altar, and generator placement. Some maps are even themed around a particular Killer, such as the Racoon City Police Department for Nemesis or Haddonfield for Michael Myers.

Perks And Status Effects
To keep things interesting, Dead By Daylight uses its own system of Perks and Status Effects that can impact both the Survivors and Killers alike. There’s a huge list of them to use, with some being unique to particular characters on both the Survivor and Killer roster. It can be a little intimidating to figure out this system as a new player, but we’ve provided some great guides to get you started or act as a refresher for veterans looking to keep themselves updated with the latest changes to the meta.

The Survivors
If you like a challenge and the fast-paced thrill of the chase then the Survivors are undoubtedly for you. There are 27 to choose from (so far) and their role is to escape the Nightmare by powering up generators whilst avoiding the clutches of whatever terrifying Killer has been matched up against them. When you first start as a Survivor, it can often feel like the odds are stacked against you and that the Killers will constantly wipe the floor with you. But, you do have a number of advantages at your disposal to keep yourself and the rest of the team alive.
For one, there are four players trying to make their way out of the hellish landscape you’re stuck in whilst there’s only one murderous entity on the prowl, so teamwork is essential. Survivors also have items, perks, and unique skill sets depending on the character you choose that can give you an edge over whoever’s hunting you down.

FAQ
Dead By Daylight can be hard for new players to get into at first. There are so many mechanics, systems, Survivors, maps, and Killers to get to grips with that you can stall out with so much choice. To ease you in, as well as provide a source of other information you might find handy, here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Dead By Daylight.
How Dead By Daylight Works
Dead By Daylight may seem complicated, but it’s pretty simple once you get going with it. This asymmetrical horror game has two roles, Survivor or Killer, and they both have their own goals they need to reach in order to win.
Survivors
Playing as a Survivor, your objective will be to escape the map and avoid being sacrificed to The Entity by whatever Killer is roaming around. To do this, you need to repair and turn on five generators, which will activate two exit gates (and a hatch) that you can leave the map through.
Use stealth, teamwork, and successfully complete Skill Checks to avoid detection and live to fight another day.
Killers
As a Killer, your objectives are simple: murder and maul to your heart’s content to please the ever-watching dark Entity. Use the various powers and tricks of each merciless murderer to break generators and down Survivors before placing them onto Hooks to sacrifice them to The Entity.
There are three phases to the sacrifice process, during which the Survivors can wriggle free or be rescued by their teammates, so keep an eye on them to ensure the ritual is completed.
How To Play Dead By Daylight With Friends
Dead By Daylight is at its best when you’re playing with friends, and if you want to mercilessly murder your pals as a monster or flee in terror as you see how sadistic someone in your group can be as a Killer, then it couldn’t be easier to get a match going with friends. Here’s how:
- Load up Dead By Daylight.
- Navigate to the Friends section and start inviting people into your lobby.
- To play as a Survivor select “Survive With Friends” before creating the Lobby.
- To Play as a Killer select “Kill Your Friends” before creating the Lobby.
- Note: games with friends can’t be made public.
- Playing with friends as a Survivor will allow you to earn Ranks and Bloodpoints, but playing as a Killer with friends does not.
How To Drop Survivors
Dropping Survivors may seem counter-intuitive, but it’s handy if you’re being mobbed by other players or if your particular Killer has a tactical bonus for hitting downed players. Since DBD received crossplay support back in August of 2020, the ways in which you can play out your slasher flick fantasies have only increased. Available on Xbox, Playstation, PC, and Switch, it can get a little confusing at times to remember what each particular button is mapped to, so here’s what they should be:
- PS4/PS5: press the Circle button.
- Xbox: press the B button.
- PC: press the R key.
- Nintendo Switch: press the A button.
Dead By Daylight: When Does The Hatch Spawn?
The Hatch, or as it was originally called, “The Black Lock,” is an extra way to escape the Nightmare aside from the Exit Gates. It spawns in a random location on the map. To spawn it in, you need to meet specific criteria, which we’ve listed below:
- Power on a number of generators equal to the number of remaining survivors plus one. So four survivors need five generators, three need four powered up, and so on.
- If there’s only one survivor left, it will trigger automatically.
- Opening it requires a Skeleton Key or a Dull Key.
- After it opens, you have 10 seconds before it locks again and requires another key to open.
- If a Killer closes the hatch, it shuts permanently and triggers the Endgame Collapse.
What Does The Key Do In Dead By Daylight?
Although they may seem like a mysterious item, the main use of Keys is to unlock the Hatch as a means to escape. With the right add-ons, they can also be used to see the Aura of both Killers and Survivors. There are three of them in total and they all have a corresponding rarity:

What Does Luck Do In Dead By Daylight?
Luck is a mechanic that often goes unnoticed but can be incredibly helpful. Here’s what you need to know:
- It affects your chances of escaping from a Hook or a Bear Trap.
- Certain Offerings can increase your or the entire team’s Luck.
- The “Up The Ante” and other Perks can also increase it.
- The Chance Proficiency Indicator will appear when performing an action, and it will show if you have a higher or lower chance of failing your task.
- Luck can be stacked.
- It does not impact the Rarity of items that are found in Chests in a session.
Does Dead By Daylight Have Mobile Crossplay?
Dead By Daylight has mobile crossplay, though it is limited to other mobile devices. So, Android and iOS can play together, but you can’t connect with PC or console players.
Will Dead By Daylight Have Cross Progression?
Dead By Daylight currently has Cross Progression between Steam and Google Stadia accounts, but no other platform other than that is available yet.
Nintendo Switch was supposed to have it in September 2020 and the developers have teased it back in May of 2021, but console Cross Progression has yet to appear.
How Dead By Daylight’s Ranks Work
The Ranks in Dead By Daylight are a personal scoring system that’s used for competitive matchmaking purposes and leaderboard positions. Each role has 20 ranks, with #1 being the best. Players will go up and down this ladder based on their performance during a Trial.
Ranks are locked to seasons, which run for one month. At the end of every season, all of the Killer or Survivor ranks reset and it begins again. You also get rewards in the form of Bloodpoints depending on your position on the ladder at the end as an incentive to perform better.
