Horses make their long-awaited comeback in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, giving you the chance to scour Hyrule in search of your adventure-long partner in crime. With horses of all shapes and sizes to discover and ample customization options, you’re certain to have a partner that matches your unique self.
Beyond being able to lug you around, horses can now tug around carts if you save up enough points in the new Pony Points system. You can also now increase their stats to make them more versatile and hardy if you sweet-talk Malanya. The possibilities now with horses are greater than ever.
Finding Horses
There is a countless number of horses in Hyrule, and any can be yours through dedication and know-how.
From the beginning, you can find Wild Horses grazing in wide, open areas in most regions. They are the most prominent type of horse, and while they can be found in just about any area large enough, there are a few good locations to search for companions in the early game:
- Hyrule Field – Windvane Meadow
- Hyrule Field – Whistling Hill
- Hyrule Field – Romani Plains
You can tame any wild horse by sneaking up on them, jumping on with A, and calming them by mashing L. So long as you have the stamina to tame them, they will calm down, and you can take the calm horse to any stable to register them.
You can have up to ten horses with max Pony Points.
There are also rideable creatures like skeletal horses, deer, ram, and other such animals. However, you cannot register them at a stable to keep (though the reaction of the stable master may be worth the trip).
After registering a horse, you may wish to strengthen your bonds with your friend. Increasing your bond will make your horse listen to you more, making it easier to ride across the vast lands of Hyrule.
To increase bonds with a horse, you can either:
- Soothe them – Press L while riding when your horse begins to act up.
- Feed them – Hold or drop a carrot/apple/similar treat in front of the horse.
Unique Horses
There are also unique horses to discover and board at your local stable. Each of these will require special circumstances to be met or locations to be uncovered, and there are no others like them.
These horses also boast some of the highest stats, making them highly valuable for your adventure.

Stables – All Basic Features
Once you get your mitts on a horse, you’ll want to take them to a stable.
Stables are hub areas scattered across Hyrule where you can enjoy a variety of services and win rewards. They’re landmarks to look for along your journey across Hyrule, and you’ll find yourself returning to them often for various reasons.
You can enjoy the following services at almost all locations:
- Lodging – Rest for a period of time to recover hearts (regular), gain additional hearts and stamina (Malanya), and pass time.
- Cooking – Create foods and elixirs as well as learn new recipes from the recipe poster inside.
- Explore Wells – Explore the depths of the well at each stable for new resources and locations.
- Merchanting – Purchase and sell wares from traveling merchants like Beedle.
- Pony Points Ledger – Receive rewards from the Pony Points you’ve accumulated.
- Horse Care – Register, take/board, and customize equipment and mane/tail for your horses.
There are 18 stable locations, and visiting all but two of them will grant you one Pony Point.

Pony Points
Pony Points are points that go toward rewards you can claim for you and your horses. For a certain number of Pony Points, you can redeem them in stages at the book on the counter inside every stable.
Pony Points can be earned by:
- Visiting a stable for the first time.
- Sleeping in (and paying for) a bed.
- Registering a new horse.
Unique rewards can be gained until you reach 40 Pony Points (the 50 percent off ticket). Afterward, all rewards will interchange between Endura Carrots and Sleepover Tickets every five points.
Pony Points can also be gained from mini stable quests given by patrons. For example, the woman outside Wetland Stable gives two Pony Points for killing monsters nearby.
All Rewards
3 Points | Towing Harness | Allows you to attach a harness through customization so your horse may pull wagons. |
---|---|---|
5 Points | Horse God Fabric | Fabric can be brought to the Hateno Dye Shop to reskin your Paraglider with a new design. |

16 Points | Mane Restyling Service | Color and braid your horse’s mane and tail; new customization feature. |

45 Points | x5 Sleepover Ticket | Stay once at a stable for free. |

Clarification: Pony Points are cumulative. They are not spent when you receive a reward. Therefore, you only need five points to get the Horse God Fabric, not eight.
Upgrading And Reviving Horses – Malanya, The Horse God
Malanya returns in Tears of the Kingdom to help protect and revive your beloved equine companions.
For the price of specific and complicated meals, you can increase the stats of your horse, like increased strength and speed. And for one Roasted Endura Carrot, you can revive a deceased horse regardless of how that horse passed (yes, even if it’s your fault, but you will be judged by TheGamer staff; beware!).
To find Malanya, you’ll need to travel to the Deep Akkala region in the far northeastern corner of the Hyrule map. She rests behind the East Akkala Stable on Bloodleaf Lake.
However, after you find her, you’ll have to lure her out with an Endura Carrot. You can get this carrot by:
- Earning them through Pony Points.
- Growing them in Hateno Village’s garden.
- Finding them at the peak of Satori Mountain.
- Finding one at the Cherry Blossom Altar beside Yamiyo Shrine.
- Earning one from the Kakariko Village’s General Store owner’s sidequest.
With Malanya found and your horses cozily boarded and cared for, you’ll be able to take your companions on your adventure across Hyrule from beginning to end.
