If you have seen The Witcher 3 gameplay trailer, you may recall a vampire telling Geralt to take a hike in much cruder terms. This rather entertaining vampire is not part of the game’s main storyline and is instead found under Novigrad in a quest that is all too easy to miss.
This guide will show you how to reach his resting place deep within the Novigrad sewers and how to resolve the encounter, if you want to see him for yourself. There are some eccentricities in the quest that make it unusually difficult to end that you may not be aware of.
How To Start A Tome Entombed
This quest is hard to start if you aren’t pointed in the right direction first. You will need to find the vampire’s sarcophagus in the sewers before you can begin.
The easiest way to reach it is to enter the sewers through Tretogor gate. Follow the bridge from the fast travel point and look for an entrance to the city walls on the other side.
From there, travel down the tunnel until you find a staircase leading down in a tower.
This is the same tower you run through in A Dangerous Game.
Take the stairs all the way to the bottom and turn on Witcher Senses. You will find a breakable wall shortly after entering the sewers. Break it down and walk into the cavern to begin the quest.
Dealing With The Vampire Under Novigrad
You will meet a Professor Vairmont Jonne, from the Faculty of Applied Archeology (tomb raiding, probably), standing over a sealed sarcophagus. He tells Geralt that there is an elven manuscript within and asks the witcher to help him open it.
The two find a vampire sleeping within. After a short, direct exchange, the professor decides that the best course of action is to wake the vampire up again. You can agree or point out that it is a terrible idea and walk away.
This quest will not end if you walk away. You will have to assist the professor or live with the quest remaining in your quest log for the rest of your playthrough.
The vampire will not be amused on his second awakening and will transform into a katakan before attacking. You will have to kill him to both remain alive and complete the quest.
The katakan is a type of vampire that can turn invisible and strike swiftly in hit-and-run attacks. You can counter these assaults by forcing it out of invisibility through fire-based bombs and signs or by employing the Moon Dust bomb.
It is also weak to Vampire Oil and vulnerable to the effects of Black Blood.
